Scientific guidelines and ongoing projects
Two important scientific guidelines have been explicitly defined for coming years. They are mainly going to mobilise members of the laboratory coming from various axes.
The research development in right, computing and electronic sciences, and sociology
In the collective plan, this multidisciplinary research emerged in the research contract on “The right to be forgotten" (by Maryline Boizard – IODE) financially-supported by the Mission Research for Right and Justice (2012-2015). This contract gave rise to a report (in February, 2015, 218 p.) and a conference "Right to be digital forgotten: challenges and perspectives" (Rennes, March 2015).
This collaborative research, which has mobilised several members of IODE, is mainly continuing with a project called PROFILE “Analysis and mitigation of the risks connected to the on-line profiling: construction of a global approach in the intersection of right, computing and sociology” (2016-2019), supported by Maryline Boizard (IODE) and Benoît Baudry (IRISA UMR INRIA 6074). This project was selected by an international jury. It benefits from the financing of Labex CominLabs (a device financially-supported as a program of investment for future) and it involves 16 law researchers (IODE members), computing and sociology.
Its goal consists in:
- identifying and analysing ICT users’ behaviour,
- profiling practices and impact on freedom and individual fundamental rights,
- reaching appropriate legal and computing solutions in order to reduce individual rights infringements.
In addition to IODE, there are other partner laboratories: IRISA/INRIA Rennes (ASAP and DiverSE teams), IRISA (UMR 6074 – Druid team) and PREFics (EA Rennes 2).
As part of this project, two theses will be financed. The first one is on computing and the second one, on right and based on the theme “The consent to use personal data: legal principles and technological effectiveness” (by Maryline Boizard and Benoît Baudry). In connection with this project, supported by another source of funding, another thesis will be realized about “Connected objects, prevention and health insurance” (by Marion Del Sol).
We can underline that the laboratory IODE is also participating in another project of Labex CominLabs, the LIMAH project (LInking media in Acceptable Hypergraphs 2014-2017) which includes IRISA and LINA (natural language processing) members, CRPCC (psychology, ergonomics) and PREFics (sociology). In this context, Annie Blandin (IODE) and one of her PhD students (Thomas Perennou – totally financed by the program) are interested in the legal feasibility of the connected media. This notion, that makes reference to collections of multimedia data, is structured through explicit links established between documents and based on closeness and similarity between contents and opinions…
In this sense, they are questioning themselves on:
- current and future legal flexibility,
- connected media and copyright,
- determination of rules in the context of convergence between media differently regulated,
- responsibility.
Expertise on legal questionings connected to the cyberspace, in particular in the field of cyber security
In this area of research, part of the activity of IODE is working with the Cyber Centre of Excellence (in French, PEC), our laboratory’s member of the club "Research" (the only Social Science and Humanities laboratory). This centre, established in Brittany, has a national impact and an international aim. One of its goals consists in stimulating activity research, training and innovation to develop the cyber security industrial sector.
Besides, a workgroup associating members of IODE - linked to Responsibility and security - and the Division of the Global Pole Action and Land combat forces from the Research Centre of Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan Schools -– has employed its activity in a research program called Cyber.Juris, a co-managed program directed by Maryline Boizard (IODE) and Didier Danet (CREC St Cyr).
This research is in interaction with the sociological and IT approaches, and it is involved in legal and societal problems connected to cyber security. It also includes decision-making processes and confidence in cyberspace (securing data, personal data consent, commercial property insurance). The scientific approach identifies organisations role in cyberspace to enhance innovative actions and anticipate new answers in decision-making. The researchers ‘goal of the Cyber.Juris project consists in developing a wide range of social science and humanities data, and involving a stakeholders’ mobilisation (including companies) in order to act in a security cybernetic environment.
In this context, it may be noted the realising thesis by Jean-Nicolas Robin concerning “The penal measures of cyber security” (by Claudia Ghica-Lemarchand, IODE and Ronan Doaré, CREC St Cyr).
Contract Agreement Research (2010-2015)
Several research projects were conducted by the Jean Monet Chair about “The European Union and the Information Society” in the period 2010-2015.
